Nintendo E3 Direct Conference Impressions

Nintendo’s new strategy of skipping E3 and only doing a Direct that only they’re hosting worked out awful. It lagged through all the good stuff but played perfectly fine for the garbage like the Wii Fit and stuff. Huge Pokemon fan so I was very excited to see a new type revealed, and also older Pokemons are getting retyped to Fairy as well so that’s awesome. I didn’t get to see a lot of the petting stuff but that looks like something kids would love, I couldn’t care less for that though. I was disappointed that Retro’s next game is Donkey Kong, I was hoping for a new IP or something, didn’t a Donkey Kong port just happened like last month? Also the new 3D Mario game is very disappointing. When I first saw it I assumed it was a 3DS game, instead it’s for the Wii U. It looks fun but I don’t think it belongs on the Wii U, I wanted to see a more open Mario game like Galaxy and 64, not a sequel to a 3DS game.

The impression I get from the Wii U is that its basically a more expensive 3DS that lacks the portable advantage of the 3DS. The only game that really wowed me was obviously Smash Bros. Oh my god, the beauty. Finally Smash in HD, hopefully its playable at E3 and we get to see some gameplay clips. I was very surprised by Mega Man, that was a awesome surprise. I also loved that wrestling ring stage they showed, that was fucking awesome. It looks like they teased the return of boss battles at the end as well when they showed Mega Man getting ready to fight Yellow Devil. The Direct didn’t make me feel like I’m missing anything good on the Wii U, the good stuff is coming in 2014 so I don’t need it any time soon. Plus, there was no price drop, the Wii U is only $50 more expensive then the ps4. Speaking of that I just remembered that Sony didn’t announce a price drop for the Vita. Overall the show felt like it played it safe, too safe.

Edit: A new character was announced for Smash Bros… Wii Fit Trainer… No, seriously… What a fucking waste, hopefully shes the only “joke” character and they’re just getting that crappy character out the way.

5 Games I’m Looking Forward To

While current consoles will soon be replaced in a year or two(and handhelds already replaced) there are still many great games being replaced, some being new IPs or sequel to an existing franchise. Some great games coming out include Sly 4, Gears of War Judgment, DayZ standalone, and so on. But there are five games that really stand out to me.

5) Pokemon X & Y

I’ve been obsessed with Pokemon since I could walk, guilty as charged. Not only is this game the first fully 3D Pokemon game but it’s also a new generation as well, brand new Pokemon to catch! While some thought the 5th gen Pokemon were ugly(unfairly might I add) I actually truly enjoyed it. One thing i hope that isn’t  in X & Y is the requirement to use HMs, I hate having to waste a party slot or move slot on HMs.

4) Puppeteer

When Sony first showed this game I was under the impression that it would be released on the Vita, well it still might since Sony is pushing Cross-Buy, but boy, was I impressed. While it might look like a kid’s game it certainly doesn’t sound like it judging from the previews. Puppeteer is a 2.5D side scroller where instead of the character going through the stage, the stage moves. The main character gains power ups by changing his head, once he is hurt his head bounces around for a couple of seconds and you must immediately chase after it or you’re dead, buddy.

3) Tearaway

I believe this will undoubtedly be one of the Vita’s killer apps(now Sony needs to give the damn thing a price cut). Being developed by one of Sony’s power house developers, Media Molecule, Tearaway is a 3D platformer that will take advantage of many of the Vita’s Unique features. Hopefully they don’t feel forced and inconvenient to use like Uncharted Golden Abyss.

2) Super Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS

Its Smash Bros, one of the best fighting series ever, do I need to say anymore? Call me crazy but if I had to pick between a new Mario game or Smash Bros, Smash Bros wins hands down, everyday of the week. Although, I wonder how it’ll play on the 3DS. Hopefully it doesn’t hold down the Wii U version of the game. By the way, Nintendo, do us Pokemon fans a solid and bring back Mewtwo.

1) Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is practically all but confirmed at this point. If any game took me by surprise this generation its Fallout 3. When I first saw gameplay I thought it was some kind of crappy horror game. But then I bought it on sale for the PS3, and my mind completely changed. Fallout 3(and New Vegas) are without a doubt two of the best games that I’ve ever played, and they even got better once I got them both on PC; god bless the modding community and their creativity. Word of advice, if you’re interested in Fallout(or Elder Scrolls) buy it for the PC or save up for a gaming PC, seriously, its worth it.
