Last of Us Demo Impression

The Last of Us demo was finally unlocked today, though a bit later than it was supposed to, no problem for me though since I just decided to play some God of War: Ascension multiplayer for an hour assuming it would get fixed by then(which it did). The demo downloads very quickly, first its the launcher, then it downloads the actual demo once the launcher is complete. Once I got into the game the very first thing I noticed was the resemblance to the Uncharted series, I don’t know if Joel’s animations are brand new or if he’s using the one Naughty Dog used for Drake but they both look like they share the same ones, or at the very least they share some. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, the animations from Uncharted are very good. Luckily for us though that appears to be the only thing both game share in common.

The demo’s setting was a pretty dark and moody one, it reminded me of some areas in Fallout 3. You can clearly tell that shit has went down in the area, buildings collapsed, gaping holes all over the place, nature slowly but surely reclaiming the area. It’s very beautiful. Unlike Uncharted, this is more or less a stealth game. See, supplies are limited, there is no regenerating health, plus there is an enemy known as Clickers(more on them a bit later) who can kill you in one hit. Another thing that is also interesting is that ammo is very scarce so you’ll want to be very careful with it, also you must take into consideration the sound’s the gun makes as well because it WILL alert other enemies. This is obviously out of Naughty Dog’s comfort zone and even if the game doesn’t sound appealing to you(I recommend you give it a try though, ND is unarguably one of the best developers of this generation), at the very least you got to give them credit for trying something they’ve never done before.

For you newbies the game also has an option that lets Joel see through walls when standing still to help you out, don’t fret though you hardcore gamers, this option can be turned off completely, though if you plan on not using it I recommend you play with some really good headphones. The demo was fun and definitely made me a bit excited for the game, the problem with it though was that it was far too short. It can be completed in like what, 15 minutes? The Clicker’s also disappointed me. You only meet two in the demo and one is handled through QTE(seriously, fuck the person who thought of QTE, laziest mechanic in gaming), you only get to handle one of them your way. One thing I really like about the Clickers though is that they’re blind so they won’t be able to see you, the way they find you is by listening, so to distract them you throw bricks and bottles around to divert their attention somewhere else(this is possible with all the enemies). There wasn’t much to fight in the demo unfortunately, as a matter a fact, there were only like 8 enemies. It’s a demo though so whatever. All I’m saying is that if you plan on buying/renting GoW:A only for the demo don’t even bother, if you do that, buy it for God of War, not the demo or else you’ll feel disappointed.

HOLY SHIT, BIOSHOCK INFINITE!!!

HOLY CRAP, MAN!! MIND= BLOWN!! I was expecting a plot twist, but my god they’re so many in like the last 30 minutes. While I feel that the gameplay is a slight downgrade compared to the original BioShock, the story blows the orginal’s out of the water, especially them plot twists! Go beat BioShock Infinite NOW, and if you don’t own it, GO BUY IT!!!

Having a Blast With God of War Acension Multiplayer

So I finally beat the singleplayer for GoW:A and it me just say that it was amazing. That final boss, man. Also it was nice not to see Kratos yelling 24/7. Anyway, since i finished that part of the game I’ve been having a blast with the multiplayer part. I’m one of those who doesn’t even like multiplayer shoe horned into every game since I’m mostly a single player kind of guy. But this is one of those rare occasions where it works really well and feels natural. I’ve mostly only played Team Favor of the Gods which is basically team death match mixed in with domination. Though I’ll most likely try out capture the flag later on when i turn my PS3 back on.

… So yea, If you don’t mind, I’ll be returning to Ascension now.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Review

Thanks to spring break(which went by far too quickly) I was finally able to get through some of my games in my backlog, one of which is Ni no Kuni which I originally pre-ordered. Ni No Kuni is as JRPG as it gets, there’s a world map you can explore, grinding, monster catching(familiar taming in this case). All in all it takes elements found in many of the greatest JRPG games and puts them all in one game. The game begins with Oliver, our hero, also known as the one with the pure heart in his hometown Motorville. It’s a quite little town, which to be quite honest was quite boring, but don’t fret as you don’t spend much time here before you finally arrive in the other world, where the true game starts.

I don’t want to get too much into the story, but without entering spoiler territory it was quite annoying for me as the gamer to completely understand what was going on while the characters themselves don’t have a clue and takes them quite a while to figure out. This wouldn’t be a problem if it only happened once or twice, but it happens quite a lot throughout the game.

Now if you’ve ever watched a Studio Ghibli movie you know just how creative they are, and it truly shines in this game with its Pokemon like monster system. Also, let me just mention I adore the familiar names(one, off the top of my head is Girlfiend who is a ghost that carries her tombstone, and was also someone’s girlfriend when she was alive.) The English voice acting cast is also quite amazing, the only one that falls a little short is the lead, Oliver. It’s not that his voice actor did a bad job, it’s just that sometimes he sounds dead compared to the rest of the cast.

Now for the gameplay, like i mentioned earlier, the game has a Pokemon capturing like mechanic where Esther can tame a familiar after defeating it. I had some issues with this though, since it’s all based on chance I would often find myself grinding on a familiar that i wanted for myself; this becomes even more frustrating for certain side quest which has you capturing certain familiars. Though, the good thing about it was that I did little to no grinding because I was always either over leveled or just there where the game wasn’t too easy or too hard.

I should also mention that there are also some other odd design choices as well. But, let me first mention that the AI in the game is in my opinion, complete trash; Esther being the worse. Esther will eat through her MP like there’s no tomorrow. Now sure, you can change her tactic to lets say, “don’t use skills,” but by doing this she’ll become the punching bag to your opponent; which for some odd reason the enemy ALWAYS goes after the poor girl, no matter what tactic i had her in. This is a huge problem because she’s the only character that can tame familiars. So be prepared to not only fight monsters, but keep Esther healthy just in case a familiar wants to be tamed.

Overall, this is a love letter and a must have for any JRPG lovers and Studio Ghibli fans, and if you’re both like myself you should already have this amazing game! It has fantastic music, character progression, a fun battle system, and is a quite longer than most games in the market these days; it took me 46 hours to beat the main story.
